Authentic and posed emotional vocalizations trigger distinct facial responses

چکیده
The ability to recognize the emotions of others is a crucial skill. In visual modality, sensorimotor mechanisms provide an important route for emotion recognition. Perceiving facial expressions often evokes activity in muscles and motor somatosensory systems, this relates performance tasks. It remains unclear whether how similar extend audition. Here we examined electromyographic electrodermal responses nonverbal vocalizations that varied emotional authenticity. Participants (N = 100) passively listened laughs cries could reflect authentic or posed emotion. Bayesian mixed models indicated listening laughter evoked stronger than crying. These were sensitive Authentic more zygomaticus orbicularis, typically associated with positive affect. We also found orbicularis corrugator related subjective evaluations subsequent authenticity perception task. Stronger predicted higher perceived corrugator, muscle negative affect, lower Moreover, elicited skin conductance laughs. This arousal effect did not predict task performance, however. For crying, physiological judgments. Altogether, these findings indicate affects peripheral nervous system vocalizations. They point role evaluation auditory modality.

Amygdala responses to nonlinguistic emotional vocalizations.
Whereas there is ample evidence for a role of the amygdala in the processing of visual emotional stimuli, particularly those with negative value, discrepant results have been reported regarding amygdala responses to emotional auditory stimuli. The present study used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate cerebral activity underlying processing of emotional nonlinguis...
متن کاملPerceptual and acoustic differences between authentic and acted nonverbal emotional vocalizations.
Most research on nonverbal emotional vocalizations is based on actor portrayals, but how similar are they to the vocalizations produced spontaneously in everyday life? Perceptual and acoustic differences have been discovered between spontaneous and volitional laughs, but little is known about other emotions. We compared 362 acted vocalizations from seven corpora with 427 authentic vocalizations...
متن کاملUnseen facial and bodily expressions trigger fast emotional reactions.
The spontaneous tendency to synchronize our facial expressions with those of others is often termed emotional contagion. It is unclear, however, whether emotional contagion depends on visual awareness of the eliciting stimulus and which processes underlie the unfolding of expressive reactions in the observer. It has been suggested either that emotional contagion is driven by motor imitation (i....
متن کاملAccuracy and intensity of posed emotional expressions in unmedicated schizophrenia patients: vocal and facial channels.
This study investigated the ability of schizophrenia patients to volitionally display various emotional expressions. Accuracy and intensity of facial and vocal emotional expression were rated in 26 unmedicated male schizophrenia patients and 20 non-patient male controls while posing emotional facial and vocal expressions. Results indicate that schizophrenia patients, compared to non-patient con...
متن کاملDistinct temporal processing of task-irrelevant emotional facial expressions.
There is an ongoing debate concerning the extent to which emotional faces automatically attract attention. Using a single-target Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) methodology, it has been found that presentation of task-irrelevant positive or negative emotionally salient stimuli (e.g., negative scenes or erotic pictures) results in a temporary inability to process target stimuli (emotion-...
